 | songwriiting: We Songwriters |
We songwriters are kind of an odd lot. Once we get into it, our entire lives can revolve around writing. It can overwhelm us, make us late for anything, and interrupt our sleep. It can help us see ourselves and others and the world around us differently. Songwriting can help us better handle adversity (?At least when this is over I?ll get a couple of songs out of it.?) or create it (?I haven?t written a new song in I don?t know how long! Will I ever write one again?!??).
As much as it consumes us, rarely do we really talk about the actual process. Part of the reason might be that it is elusive subject matter. We?re not quite sure what we?re doing or how we?re doing it. We just know. Furthermore, some of us would prefer not to talk about it. Afraid we might lose our mojo. Maybe knowing too much will spoil it all.
Yet we love those stories of how our favorite songs were written. We remember well those conversations we do have about writing and eagerly read any interview we find with songwriters talking about the ?craft?.
Over the next while, I plan to discuss a few things I?ve learned in almost 20 years of writing songs. I also plan to do studies of certain writer?s styles. I hope to write inspiring articles that will encourage writers at all levels. May you ?get a song or two out of this.?
